Adding Contrast To Your Color Palette

One common complaint that I get from clients is that their space is “blah”. They feel that it is lacking something, it is mundane. Upon setting foot in just about every consultation, I usually spot the same problem; there is no contrast!

Contrast is a fundamental element of design. It helps to create depth and harmony within a space. Too much of the same or similar colors will eventually melt together and create the “blah” feeling that so many people have fallen victim to. The simple act of adding contrast can help to highlight certain features or even hide others. 

Creating contrast is not just relative to color, it is relative to lines and textures as well. Creating contrast can be accomplished by mixing textures, materials, and colors. 

How Do I Create Contrast?

• The art of creating contrast in your home is by adding just enough. If you run wild with it, you’ll run into the same problem you started with; everything will look the same. Here are some quick and easy ways to add a just the right amount of contrast to create a striking balance within your space.

• Start small with something like switching out hardware on your cabinets or furniture. 

• Add some contrasting picture frames around art and photos on your walls (black if your space is too light, light if your space is too dark).

• Add some dark throw pillows to your sofas and seating.

• Switch out your coffee table with a darker one.

• Purchase dining chairs or bar stools that are contrasting in themselves (dark legs and light seat/back).

• If you have a lot of hard lines (squares and rectangles), add some soft lines (circles and ovals). 

• If you have a lot of metal, add some wood to create contrasting textures.
