One of the biggest misconceptions I hear from homeowners is that an interior designer comes in after the plans are drawn or after construction begins. In reality, the most successful custom homes begin with thoughtful planning long before the first wall is framed.

The biggest advantage of hiring your interior designer early isn’t simply choosing beautiful finishes. It’s having the entire home thoughtfully planned before construction begins.

Most people think of design as cabinetry, tile, paint colors, and lighting fixtures. While those selections are certainly important, they’re only one piece of a much larger puzzle. Every decision in a home influences another. Your furniture layout affects lighting placement. Artwork determines where picture lights belong. Bathroom mirrors dictate vanity light heights. Window treatments may require additional framing support. Even something as simple as where you intend to place a desk can determine whether a floor outlet should be installed before the concrete is poured.

These are the details that cannot always be corrected once construction is underway.

One area that consistently surprises homeowners is electrical planning. It’s far more involved than deciding where a light fixture should hang. We walk our clients through every room as though they are already living in the home, considering which door they’ll enter from, which lights should turn on together, where dimmers belong, and how each space will function throughout the day. Those conversations create a home that feels intuitive rather than one that simply looks beautiful.

Design also extends well beyond the finishes themselves. Every tile layout, flooring direction, millwork detail, wallpaper selection, plumbing fixture, and furnishing is considered together rather than independently. When each decision is made in isolation, opportunities are missed. When the entire home is designed as one cohesive vision, every detail supports the next.

A recent custom home perfectly illustrates why this process matters. Because we were involved before construction began, we were able to center the great room chandelier over the future furniture layout instead of the architectural center of the room, creating a much more balanced final result. We planned blocking behind every bathroom accessory before drywall was installed, determined the exact sizes and installation heights for every mirror and vanity light, and worked directly with the electrician to fine-tune lighting placement in a particularly narrow powder room so every element would fit comfortably.

We also redesigned the primary bedroom layout to create a seating area that captures the view outside, reconfigured an oversized breakfast nook into a more appropriately scaled space for the family while adding an exterior door, and planned specialty window treatments early enough to incorporate additional structural support before the walls were finished. Each of these decisions was relatively simple during construction. Had they been discovered later, they would have required costly revisions, compromises, or complete redesigns.

Perhaps the greatest value of hiring an interior designer early is that you no longer have to visualize every decision on your own. Most homeowners aren’t accustomed to reading plans or imagining how hundreds of individual selections will come together months later. That’s our job.
